Blog Entry 4
My learning from this course has
grown tremendously from the start of the semester to this point now. My
knowledge of ELL learners and how they learn, speak, and write along with
strategies for teaching ELL students has grown exponentially. When I first
started this class, I didn’t know what to expect, because I didn’t know much
about ELL students and the way to instruct these students. But I quickly
learned that teaching ELL and ESL students are somewhat the same and I found a
connection between the two. These connections from the text to classroom really
let me see how I would implement the strategies and procedures in my classroom.
Some strategies
and methods I have learned throughout this course is the audiolingual method. I
referred to this method from the book Teaching
by Principles, “this audiolingual method used a great deal of oral
activity- pronunciation drills, pattern practice, and authentic conversations
with peers.” (Brown, H. D., & Lee, H., p. 21). This strategy stuck with me because
it appealed to me as a student and teacher because the only language learning method
I knew of was the grammar method, that I was taught in school. So, when I discovered
the audiolingual method it seemed like it was a lot more beneficial to students
with oral speaking development and comfortability speaking within another
language. This method also stuck with me because the teacher I interviewed also
used this method this method of teaching, and she really explained to me how
great this method was with students.
This class
will affect my professional practice in ways I didn’t even think of before I started
taking this course. The knowledge I learned about ELL students can be
transferred to everyday teaching like the knowledge I learned about language
skills, and teaching reading, writing and grammar. This information from this
course expanded my knowledge on how I should teach students for the better. this
knowledge from this course can transfer because all students are ELL learners
of some sort. Especially in the primary level of education. As far addressing the
topics we went over in class, I think that every topic we went over was beneficial.
But the topics I think were most important where when we started the to go into
teaching of the language skills like listening, speaking, reading and writing. I
feel like these topics were beneficial to me because the book went into detail
about strategies we can use and the startegies connected to my learning in my
placement for student teaching. So, I think these topics that delve into the
teaching of language skills should receive a bit more attention in my opinion.
The use of instructional technology like blogs
have really impacted my teaching philosophy. Before taking this course, I had
never used a blog before, and really struggled to set one up in the beginning
of class. Although I have used instructional technology like digital
storytelling and videos, blogs were never a part of that technological
instruction. When I started using the blog I was a little hesitant because it
was first time using it. But as I kept getting on the blog throughout the
course I really had grown to like it, because the interaction between students
was very easy to keep up with and all the discussions were all on one page.
From such a positive experience using the blogs, I would like to try to
incorporate this into my classroom.

It may be difficult to believe but in today’s world technology literacy isn’t very common. You were probably not the only one in this class who struggled with the blog. However, I think, this has given you the opportunity to learn that teaching is very different now from what it was when you were the student in elementary school.
ReplyDeleteI would like to know what changes you would like to see in this class.
There isn’t much I would change about the course. To start off the course I felt as if I was bombarded with quizzes, blog entries and replies, but you changed the syllabus to accommodate us students so that we can have ample amount of time to complete assignments. One other thing I would like to see is maybe a video or a walkthrough of how to operate a blog in the beginning of the course. I think this introduction on ow to operate the blog will help a lot of students who have never set up a blog. Other than that, I think the course was informative and your expectations were very clear.
DeleteShawn,
DeleteI really like the idea of a video or walkthrough for those of us that are completely computer illiterate. Our technology course that we had to take had one of these for our e-portfolio, and I was able to reference it while working on another assignment for a new class. This kind of scaffolding for visual learners would be so helpful. I will probably try to use this kind of strategy for my students in the future when I introduce blogging as a means for assessment on writing.
Hi Shawn,
ReplyDeleteI remember going to school when I was younger and my teacher really enforcing the audio lingual teaching method as well. As we researched the different teaching methods this semester, I have learned more about this teaching method. The audiolingual method really focuses on the oral communication and the pronunciation going along with oral administration. According to Brown & Lee, the grammar translation and reading methods prevailed in educational institutions worldwide, with few if any attempts to teach oral communication (Brown & Lee, 2015. pg. 21). Imagine if the teaching methods were as they were in the olden days and we were never introduced to the audiolingual method.
Great point Jessica,
DeleteI’m glad other research has prevailed to somewhat replace the grammar translation method, because this given method does not work for every student. luckily through this course I have learned about different methods to teach a new language and am very happy to learn that there are other methods than to teaching language like the audiolingual method.
Hi Shawn,
ReplyDeleteI really liked reading your blog post there were several things you mentioned that I felt was very important. The grammar translation method I feel is not very beneficial to students as well. The audio-lingual method that you talked about is more beneficial to students because of the various ways it impacts students. I am glad you benefited so much from this class and were able to learn many new things.
Thanks Sharmen,
DeleteYes, I personally did not like the grammar translation method because this method didn’t really help me speak the foreign language I was trying to learn, instead I just learned how to write simple sentences. That’s why I think the audiolingual method is much better because students can speak the language with peers and practice a lot out loud. Thanks for the comment.
Shawn, the audiolingual method is a great one to point out as something we should use with our future English Language Learners. It goes with having students practice their oral skills rather than sitting at a desk with pencil and paper. I look forward to applying this method and seeing how it works with my future classroom.
ReplyDeleteHey Shelly,
DeleteYes, I think this method is great to use with students trying to learn English because it allows students to practice orally with the teacher and with other peers. I can’t wait to use this method in my future classroom also. Thanks for the comment.
Shawn,
ReplyDeleteJust like you I had never experienced using a blog before and having this approach to learning has been very beneficial in the type of classroom that we are in because usually online classes don't have these kinds of expectations. Furthermore, the blog gives room so that student teachers can expand their knowledge on different approaches to teaching and working with students in the classroom.
